Introducing the new AiMT record label...

I'm now nearly 10 years into music blogging and five years into music podcasting. I guess it was inevitable that I dabble with curating a label one of these days:

antslabel.bandcamp.com

The launch release is by Balki Sagan, an ambient project of yours truly. It's one long, blissful lo-fi track. I've spent a lot of time with single-track albums lately and wanted to try my hand at it. You can score it for $1 on Bandcamp:

As far as future plans for the label, I'm keeping my options open to artist albums, compilations, physical releases, and charity releases. I'm excited to see where this goes!

Thanks to everyone who has supported AiMT over the years. This is a big step, and without the support and love I've gotten, I doubt I'd be daring enough to try this.

Best Ambient Albums of 2016

Ink, oil, and soap art by Ruslan Khasanov
No individual blurbs this year, but I still wanted to get this list out. If you've followed AiMT over the years, you may know that I have covered ambient music pretty extensively/obsessively throughout the 2010s. 2016 continued to build upon the momentum the genre has gained over recent years. With more and more tape labels popping up, the new age revival continuing to flourish, legends like Eno and Suzanne Ciani reclaiming relevancy, mainstream exposure through Stranger Things and other shows and films, and music-making software and hardware becoming more affordable and accessible, 2016 could have very well been the biggest year the genre has seen in its long history. Here are the albums that took the show in my mind.

Above I've included a Spotify playlist of selections from these albums. PRO TIP: If you have trouble loading the playlist in your Spotify app, copy this link and paste it into your Spotify app's search bar.

Baby Armie - n10.as Launch Week Mix, 02/03/2016

n10.as is a new, up and coming internet radio station based out of Montreal. I was lucky enough to be invited to contribute to their launch week programming back in March. Since then they've been killing it with consistently solid programming, as evidenced by the heaps of content on their Mixcloud. Whatever NTS is doing for London, n10.as may end up doing for Montreal. Can't wait to see the station grow and flourish.

I submitted this 50-minute ambient mix as my contribution. It touches on classic drone and new age with newer stuff and some '90s rave-era ambient house to boot.

  1. Michael Stearns - "Star Dreams (Peace Eternal)" [Hearts of Space, 1988]
  2. F.U.S.E. - "Nightdrive" [Plus 8 Records, 1993]

Gentle Daps XVIII: Guest Mix by Opaline

SUBSCRIBE TO ANTS PODCAST: iTUNES, RSS, SOUNDCLOUD, MIXCLOUD, TUMBLR
Portland-based ambient artist Opaline has gotten regular coverage here on AiMT, so I am thrilled that he's been kind enough to offer up this latest entry in the Gentle Daps series. It's a live mix made up entirely of vinyl and cassettes, and it continues the new age theme of the past few Daps episodes. The format choice is fitting considering Opaline's thick release schedule of cassettes in recent years. His most recent is called Open Source and is available on Hacktivism Records. Stream/buy it and the rest of Opaline's extensively serene catalog over on his Bandcamp page.
